Tripura govt issues austerity measures to cut public expenditures

Tripura government on Monday along with announcement of five working days in all government offices has issued a fresh memorandum announcing a series of austerity measures aimed at achieving economic growth in government expenditure. The directive, issued by the General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department on May 25, 2026, comes in supersession of an earlier memorandum dated May 13, 2026.

 According to the memorandum, the decision has been taken in pursuance of an appeal made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi considering present rising global energy prices triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict global  and now all departments and government bodies directed to strictly follow the new guidelines.

Under the new measures, Ministers and officials have been instructed to reduce convoy sizes and restrict the use of government vehicles to essential purposes only. The Director General of Police (DGP) has been authorized to rationalize security convoys in consultation with appropriate authorities.

The government has also encouraged the procurement and outsourcing of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and CNG vehicles in the Secretariat and Capital Complex areas of Agartala. Fuel-intensive political activities such as large bike rallies and motor convoys have been discouraged, while decorative lighting, DG-set usage, and large political gatherings are to be minimized.

As part of efforts to reduce expenditure, at least 75 percent of government meetings will now be conducted virtually and video conferencing mode shall be used for district review meetings with DMs, SDMs and BDOs to reduce fuel consumption and Directorate-level officers have also been advised to arrange carpooling among officials.

The memorandum further emphasizes hybrid work culture and virtual meetings. Video conferencing has been recommended for district-level review meetings involving District Magistrates, SDMs, and BDOs to cut fuel consumption. Universities, including MBB University and other higher educational institutions, have been encouraged to organize seminars in hybrid mode.

To support work-from-home arrangements, the State IT Department may establish a dedicated single-window helpdesk for employees.

In the energy conservation sector, the government proposed expansion of electric bus services in Agartala city and introduction of EV charging stations in Agartala, Udaipur, Dharmanagar, Kailashahar, and Santirbazar, Belonia. Cycling corridors may also be developed in Agartala and other urban areas.

The memorandum additionally encourages rail transport for carrying cement, food grains, and petroleum products entering Tripura to reduce fuel dependency.

Government offices and commercial establishments have been instructed to switch off non-essential lighting, decorative illumination, and outdoor signages wherever practicable.

The advisory also discourages unnecessary foreign travel. Citizens, businesses, wedding planners, and institutions have been urged to prioritize domestic travel and events over avoidable overseas expenditure. Government employees may also receive advisories to avoid non-essential foreign visits.

The memorandum clarified that the instructions will not affect essential and emergency services. The provisions will apply to all government departments, state PSUs, co-operatives, societies, rural and urban local bodies, and autonomous organizations across Tripura.

The new austerity measures have come into immediate effect and may be modified further if necessary, said the memorandum.
